Kids Learn About Yoga with Lilia Karimi's "Om My Way"

We are SO excited to welcome author Lilia Karimi for a reading by the author and snacks + shop gathering, 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 26 at 1020 Studio.

Lilia’s book “Lily Finds Her Om Way” familiarizes our littles with the importance of taking care of your body and the beauty of yoga - character Lily goes on a magical adventure through nature with her grandmother to learn the ways in which her body can bend, stretch, and grow! This picture book introduces children to yoga in a playful and creative way.

Lily’s adventure will resonate with the whole family and turn story time into yoga time in a fun and accessible way.

Starting with a frog and ending with a lion, Lily discovers yoga poses children can follow and try at home with every animal and piece of nature she connects with in the story. This story will immediately inspire children to connect and learn from the world around them, as well as serve as an accessible entry point to children's yoga.

We sat down with Lilia and asked her a few questions about her journey and how she created this wonderful book. Here is what she had to say.

Anything you would like to say about the process?

The process was LONG and definitely a creative journey! I started writing the book four years ago and began working with an agent once I wrote the original manuscript thinking I would go the traditional publishing route. I continued to revise the book in that time, until suddenly I was extremely drawn to the thought of self-publishing. It’s a lengthy process with a big learning curve, but I loved being able to make decisions on the illustrations and bringing the book to life exactly as I imagined it - colorful, diverse looking characters, and creative design! Plus, I got to choose eco-friendly paper for the book which was important to me !

What you have enjoyed most?

I have truly had a blast reading the book to kids and practicing the poses with them after. Yoga can be so playful and fun for children to explore, which can be a really different vibe than the “adult” practice which is much more quiet and introspective. In the end, it’s all yoga - just a different way to approach it for different ages!

The book has sold much faster than I was thinking, which I’m thrilled about! I was really lucky to have some yoga idols of mine write super sweet quotes for the book - like Amelia Barnes and Rachel Brathen. I’ve loving having the chance to go to schools and bookstores to offer readings! Most recently, I’m selling the book in Elliott Bay Bookstore which is my favorite bookstore in Seattle!!
